It was early in 2017 when our StudentLife department received the approval we had been waiting for – we were embarking on a journey to make the University of Guelph-Humber a CliftonStrengths campus and I was tasked with leading the project. Really, we did assessment learning workshops, is what we called them, and they were in alignment with the assessment plan cycle. I’ve been doing the same – always over coffee or lunch, and people in roles such as our interim AVP for Equity in StudentLife, the Graduate Student Government President, or an Assistant Director in Student Conduct.

However, our experts discuss four moments in particular when making a positive connection and drawing that student in is especially critical for retention. There are classes, workshops, there are social activities.
Within the All-Access Weekend, it is a fly-in program, all expense paid, so we pay for not only the student participant, but we also fly-in two family members to be flown in all at our expense for them to experience the weekend. So we really try to hone in on staying connected to our students as well after the program.
