This committee allowed us to build a cross-cohort team of people who were excited by the projects concept, and gave their time, energy, and ideas in two development workshops in early 2024.

This year we have begun a new collaboration between the Institute of Academic Development (IAD) and Clinical and Health Psychology; working closely together we have developed and delivered skill-based training workshops for students on the MSc Psychology of Mental Health (conversion) programme.

Creative problem solving, risk taking, lateral thinking, communication, project management, amongst the many core design skills this student employed in order to fulfil this unique ‘task’. We wanted everyone to feel like they could be a designer even if they didn’t or couldn’t draw.
After brainstorming a range of approaches and activity ideas for the intervention, we selected three activities to trial at a workshop with 16 students. Building on the insights from these focus groups, we entered the ideation and intervention development phase of the project. One of the activities was a dilemma-based exercise.
Not only does it offer the opportunity for our student staff to step back and identify the skills they would like to improve, but it also allows them to choose from several workshops, such as communication and influencing skills, prioritising and time management, leadership styles and public speaking.
How on earth do 140 students deliver repeated presentations and receive useful feedback in twenty hours? Each two-hour workshop was attended by 60-80 students, in a large teaching studio. The logistics were intricate, if not nerve-wracking.
November 2016’s project ‘Graphic Design in a Box’ brought final year Graphic Design students together with university careers advisers, experts in widening participation, and recent graduates, for an intensive, three-week sprint taking ECA out of the College and into the classroom to introduce high school learners to creative careers pathways.
Drawing on her own student experiences, Candela began developing the materials for the project which were structured around the dissertation journey. Workshops were run in Spring and Autumn 2019, and Candela delivered training to around 100 attendees.

For example, each year, one school addresses the large portion of their students concerned about career planning by organising the Careers Consultant for that school and running a workshop for students on that topic.
What Next: Postgraduate support There has been an increasing demand over the last year for academic peer learning provision focused on postgraduate students, both taught and research. There are already a number of models developing informally from study skills workshops around dissertations to one to one academic mentoring.
A sub-set of 8 students have also successfully taken this a step further and, under staff mentorship, have achieved Associate Fellowship of the HEA.
