Our assessment office was roughly two years old and housed five full-time staff, four of whom were heavily involved in day-to-day consultations with colleagues across 20+ departments within our studentaffairs division. What learning outcomes should I use for my program? How do I create an assessment plan?
At the time, there was only an unapproved (not officially recognized by the university) LGBTQ student group. There was also a standing committee on LGBTQ student needs that the studentaffairs office had, which did as much as they could within the confines of the administration,” he says.
The data fellows program examines areas of success and areas that need improvement, advocates for understanding how Latino students experience CSULB, and examines the impact of programming. How did you get here?
I didn’t know about this thing called StudentAffairs just yet, but I knew [there was] a way that I could work at a college and sort of do for other students—particularly first-gen, BIPOC students and Pell Grant students—what others had done for me.
This means that students are likely learning watered-down versions of these complex, nuanced competencies in soft skills workshops that reflect normative views of “good” communication or professional behaviors.
But the program also makes sure students don’t lose those day-one connections: for all four years , men in Success Academy come together for workshops, social events, and career development opportunities. And frankly, studentaffairs leadership that is committed to mental health. And I think that commitment, that passion that we see across our studentaffairs folks here at NAU at least. And so really, for us, it's about how do we leverage, I think, those relationships. Oh, what a good question.
Several partners have shared anecdotes of students arriving to campus, moving into dorms, and abruptly withdrawing upon re-entering more social settings. We also provide more hands-on support through our newly launched Financial Performance Collaborative.
I think that's something that we have realized through this workshop series - it's not a plug-in and go.
