Change Agents in a storytelling workshop with the Careers Service and Edinburgh Innovations. Ankita Chattopadhyay is a recent graduate with an MSc by Research (MScR) in Infection Medicine (Biomedical Sciences). Faculty are busy with teaching and research, making it hard to find time for collaborative curriculum design.
Students have produced videos, lesson plans, information boards, leaflets, board games, websites, smartphone apps, community dinners, workshops and more. Project deliverables can have a long and sustained impact as clients will use the materials students have created for years to come.
The role of the lecture in these courses is complementary to that of the workshop, which is the other form of teaching we use. Inma teaches on the MSc Intermediality programme and has consistently gone above and beyond for her students academically and personally. Inma took time to guide her students through Intermediality, a topic that many were new to and found complex due to the variety of mediums the course covered.
Our students are upskilled in project design through workshops spanning educational media, design and engagement (e.g. Through these workshops, students and staff from different disciplines and Schools across the University work together, leading to cross-fertilisation of ideas and cultures.
There is support from the Education Department in Edinburgh City Council, who support the orientation workshops for our students. They act as liaison between university and schools to create the school placements, as well as paying for our students to apply for Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) membership by Disclosure Scotland.
Studying abroad has been shown to give students invaluable learning opportunities that aren’t available in a traditional classroom setting. The study also showed that student learning outcomes were unique compared to the classroom. Studentengagement is important and helps build a community for travelers at the school.
As a registered nurse and academic, I’m passionate about improving people’s lives and health through education and research. As an educator, I constantly explore innovative approaches to make learning meaningful and relevant for students, practitioners and staff alike. The workshop was refined for this new aim (see Figure 3).
Fourteen students attended the all-day workshop and were guided through multiple steps to create their own board game. Since February 2016 we have run an additional full-day workshop with the postgraduate Design Informatics students, two half-day workshops, and a one-hour challenge for staff.

Subsequently, the energy in the room increased, and students appeared engaged and ready to work, play and learn together.
In addition, the group is responsible for monitoring the research work funded by the Lecture Recording Programme as part of PTAS. A series of facilitated workshops is being planned to help academic colleagues and students to work together to consider how to make best use of lecture recording for both teaching and learning.
