While many courses of this kind are excellent, there is nevertheless the danger of conveying an impression that research and teaching are disconnected. Research is something that happens upstream, where experts produce ideas. The course is designed to bridge the gap between teaching and research. General discussion ensued.
In comparison, the challenges for conducting interdisciplinary research seem to be at a lower level, for instance with the funding of a research grant, or as a student project – they are discrete and have clearly defined objectives. Furthermore, those resources of money and researchers, act as great enablers.

A flourishing field of student partnership work has recently emerged (e.g., Cook-Sather, Bovill and Felten, 2014), which critically discusses and reflects on how universities can involve students in roles that, ‘actively shape and enhance their experiences of learning and teaching’ (Healey, Flint and Harrington, 2014).
A study published in the Journal of Education and Practice showcased that CBCS implementation led to increased studentengagement, motivation, and higher levels of critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity compared to traditional education systems.
It’s quite a strange experience being on the ‘other side’ of the university, acting as both an undergraduate student and a member of staff. Working with the Researcher Development team on projects geared towards tutoring and teaching makes you appreciate how much work your lecturers and tutors put into their jobs.
These projects also develop research and critical skills obtained when writing essays. Moreover, studentsengage with the ‘real word’ and solve ‘real problems’ compared to artificial ones posed by a lecturer. These are skills required to function in the professional world and match attributes outlined by the University.

Through the MSc Performance Psychology programme at the University of Edinburgh, I, along with my dissertation supervisor (Dr Amanda Martindale), was able to partner with the NHS to investigate this idea further, specifically with scrub nurse practitioners serving on organ retrieval teams for my dissertation research.

Student-Led, Individually-Created Courses (SLICCs) offer another approach and way forward. This is a reflective framework for experiential learning, where students consider their learning gains through undertaking an activity of their choice, e.g. research, work experience, volunteering.
I was immediately interested because this year’s Conference, titled, ‘Investigate, inquire, innovate: exploring research-informed teaching practice’ aimed to celebrate diverse learning and teaching practices by adopting the lens of SoTL (Scholarship of Learning and Teaching).
To get around my fears, I realised that using a more interactive lesson meant more freedom in what I was saying and kept studentsengaged. Neil adds: The work with schools has really been embraced by our students. I was most nervous about having to deliver a lesson within time. I was really surprised how much I enjoyed the trip.

Over the last 20 years as the Programme Director of Graphic Design within Edinburgh College of Art’s (ECA) Design School I have been accustomed to teaching a wide range of students with diverse backgrounds from across the UK. Throughout this project, I researched technical aspects of solar energy generation as well as current UK energy policy, and I was required to do cash flow analysis. The nature of this exercise advanced my analytical abilities as I developed a much greater understanding of project financials and the proposing of business solutions.
