I spent two hours working on the rough draft of my research-based essay. I got back to reading Born a Crime by Trevor Noah for my First-Year Seminar class. After reading three chapters, I worked on my homework for the class, answering questions about the book and reflecting on how the themes connect to my own life.
They had impact, and it was great to find out how these former students whom I had known well were getting on as teachers. I learnt alongside my current students. Life as a probationer. Photo by former student. Our guest speakers’ laughter, earnest advice, tales of angst and perseverance were emotion-filled and genuine.
However, recently I have heard incoming undergraduate students – and their parents – saying: If the lectures are online, what’s the point of being on campus? As the first lecturer that our students see when they join us, I spend the majority of first semester debunking this myth. When I hear this, it is like a knife in my heart.
In this episode, we speak with Rob Buelow of Vector Solutions to discuss how universities can better engage students and employers by focusing on “durable skills” that better describe the value of the college experience. I wasn’t interested in counseling, psychology or research. Like all of that is great.
