We invite all EUSA (programme) reps, as well as the committee members of the School societies, Peer Support, and the student ambassadors. If some cannot make the meeting, they are encouraged to send someone else to take their place.
Cathy: Since the final presentations by the students we have ensured the student reports have been shared among a range of groups. The University’s Curriculum Transformation Project StudentEngagement Strategy group have discussed how some of the ideas might be taken forward.
In focus groups, our student interns have led discussion with peers about their personal experiences in giving feedback to the University. They have also interviewed staff members – both academic and professionalservices – who are actively engaged in innovating student feedback mechanisms.
180) have created a “ladder of student participation in curriculum design” that shows how studentengagement in the curriculum can range from no engagement within a dictated, staff-controlled curriculum to significant levels of studentengagement with student control of the curriculum (see below).
Each year, we have several categories celebrating these staff – from supervisors and cohort leads to the many professionalservices staff who keep things ticking along smoothly. I think this is a clear indicator of just how much they appreciate this part of their relationship with staff.

Edinburgh University Students’ Association was the first in the UK to offer student-led Teaching Awards, and our Awards are now in their 13th year. Staff play a pivotal role in the student experience at The University of Edinburgh, from Lecturers and Tutors to Supervisors, Personal Tutors and ProfessionalServices staff.
Similarly, we would like to thank all staff involved (academic, professionalservices, sessional), the residential site and staff, George Gaff, who similarly ensured a COVID safe space.
This platform gave a very practical way to communicate regularly and with shared purpose, potentially breaking down perceived barriers between staff and students. For students, they have personal and professional development opportunities to enhance their CVs, beyond the society involvement alone.
The membership of the group spanned all three colleges, academics and professionalservices, and created a space for holistic discussions about this to occur. In my role as Students’ Association Vice-President Education, I was invited to be a member of this task group.
This months’ Widening Participation strategy-themed Teaching Matters’ posts will showcase the already rich variety of outreach and support strategies that academic and professionalservices staff in the University are undertaking. On 29 May, there will be an open Senate session where you can hear and discuss more on this topic.
Dr Cathy Bovill who focusses on studentengagement. Her blog post will be exploring some of the highs and lows of teachers’ attempts to motivate students and make learning more exciting and engaging. David Mountain explaining the problem with patriotism, and how it is illogical, dangerous and a waste of time.
Such capabilities include both general and subject-specific experience in data and project management, communication, team facilitation, and event coordination, liaising with internal and external stakeholders, guiding conversations and speaking publicly, supporting or delivering professionalservices, and building digital resources.
Donna is particularly interested in transitions into, through, and out of university study; and how universities can support students’ self efficacy. In her work with staff, Donna focuses on the third-space – roles which are not completely academic or professionalservices, but a mixture of both. Mar 14, 2023
One solution is Go Abroad Staff , which provides Erasmus+ funding for academic and professionalservices staff to teach or train in Europe and beyond. Her interests include studentengagement, professional learning and sociomaterial methodologies.
