Professor Susan Rhind, Chair of the lecture recording Academic User Group and Director of Teaching at the Vet School, reviews the first year of Media Hopper Replay. Interestingly, at Edinburgh, as colleagues are starting to use Media Hopper Replay more routinely, we have seen the rhetoric shift.

Media Hopper Replay student helpers This, the final post in our lecture recording mini-series , is devoted to the views and thoughts of our students – the recipients of lecture recordings. SRA used social media to create communities of students before arrival at the University. SRA also leads the University’s Social Media Community. Initially set up as a practitioner forum it has developed into a learning provider and brings together more than 100 colleagues from across the University.
The more we understand about how lecture recording is being used at Edinburgh by staff and students, the more we can tailor support and guidance to meet those specific needs and develop the service accordingly. Last term, colleagues signed up for training in Learn as well as Media Hopper Replay training, for lecture recording and, on 27th March, colleagues attended our first sharing good practice event, which focused on Peer Observation.
Distance and technology as an online student can be daunting yet, with the right resources, Moodle offers a versatile platform upon which to embed our most important and engaging materials.
The first is the development and regular updating of the School’s PG tutor handbook , which is distributed to all tutors at the beginning of each academic year, and which is also available on our tutors’ Learn page, alongside other relevant teaching materials, resources and media.
Each toolkit contains 6-8 carefully chosen resources, the majority from Lynda.com and the Online Development Toolkit. All toolkits are available to University of Edinburgh staff and students. Something to watch: An online tutorial or video. Something to read: An article, summary or how to guide.
