One of the most powerful forms of inquiry-based learning that I personally use all the time in my high school science seminars is experimental inquiry. In neurology , a group of students tested how caffeine affected reaction time using a ruler-drop test.
Several years ago a student in my psychology seminar came to me with an idea for her psychology project. The project that my student did on birth order theory was part of my psychology class. Each studentconducts their own psychology experiment as their final project for the seminar.
Or you can do more of a themed community action experience where you give students some direction or structure on topic and process. For example, I do a trending issues community action project experience with my high school students around the New Year. I meet with each student if possible to look over their personal learning plans.
