It represents my personal reflections of working in UK higher education (HE) professionalservices roles and simultaneously gaining research experience through a Masters and Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD). I use this metaphor to share my experiences, and three phases, of becoming a professionalservices researcher.
Our hope has been to highlight the breadth of our student initiatives, as well as the many competing motivations involved in developing and supporting peer-led groups. The Citizen Scholar is a resource through which to investigate the beneficial outcomes of institutions acknowledging their role in civic life.
Developing such guidance and training has been a chief focus of the Digital Safety and Citizenship initiative in the Digital Skills team over the past two years, but it is clear that we need the help of both our academic and professionalservices colleagues to spread the word.
For example, students’ and staff members’ increased enjoyment of learning and teaching alongside their professionaldevelopment are particularly notable (Bovill & Bulley, 2011; Lubicz-Nawrocka, 2018; Lubicz-Nawrocka & Simoni, 2018; Matthews, 2016; Mercer-Mapstone et al., 2017), there are also many benefits!

We worked with EUMAS primarily as a ‘client’ and developed a research brief based on primary data collection looking to understand student perspectives and gain insights on the 4 pillars. The Commission suggested that the development of case studies based on actual situations should be a priority to sensitize students to the challenges of making ethical decisions.
