You might think that the teaching content in a professional vocational degree like medicine – defined by the governing body the General Medical Council ( GMC ) and detailing what a medicalstudent should know as they exit their undergraduate programme and embark on their first day as a junior doctor – would be almost entirely prescriptive.

For its six medicalstudent organisers, APEX 5 provided a steep learning curve.
The Student Research Course Foundation (SRCF) is a 10-credit course taken in the second year of the five-year undergraduate Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVM&S) degree. It is designed around a student-led group research project, allowing students to self-select their group and topic.
