I recently completed my PhD at the University of Queensland where in 2017 I was also the Project Co-Lead on the collaborative design of a university-wide student-staff partnership program. I have just come back from the studentengagement conference, RAISE 2018 , and my mind is still buzzing with new ideas.
The college maintains its commitment to principles such as integrity, peace, social justice, and community engagement, which shape both its academic and extracurricular life. The college places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, allowing students to engage in cross-disciplinary courses and independent research.
Our course – Contemporary Political Theory: Engaging in Current Research – is one of several courses at Edinburgh trying something different. One of us (Kieran) convenes the course; two of us (Sabrina and Joel) were among the students who took it in its first year (2016/17). Students can offer a fresh take on old controversies.
This is supported by internationalstudies of the need for higher education environment to do more applied “living curriculum” (Bath, et al., Moreover, several our students take work-based dissertation options for their Master’s thesis or volunteer to work in NGO or on other non-profit causes.
