This shows the potential for inspiring the educators of the future through giving students the opportunity to develop their interest in and gain first-hand experience of teaching during their degrees. Seeing the students develop in their understanding and experience in teaching over time has been both exciting and humbling.
Seconded to the Institute for Academic Development he is developing his interests in reflection, experiential learning, and student agency, to develop SLICCs institution-wide. Gavin co-leads the development of SLICCs institution-wide with Simon.
More information can be found on the SLICCs website. In the summer SLICCs students gained academic credit for a wide range of experiences, including work placements, internships, academic summer studentships, expeditions, cultural exchanges, volunteering and self-directed research.

During the presentation itself, the theorists would say a few words setting the background to the paper – no need to present the papers in full as we had read them in advance – and then two students would present prepared responses. MSc Dissertation Project There is great value in defining the qualities that characterise expertise in a specific role or domain, as this leads to more informed understanding of the key competencies needed to perform consistently at a highly proficient level.
Some companies want to hire graduates, and they are looking for a screening method that would reveal more information about the candidates than a standard interview. We talk to all these companies, figure out which questions they would like to be answered, and let our students write their dissertations on these topics.
Inevitably, when students make these choices it is linked to career exploration. With the reduced flexibility and time in current postgraduate training programmes this is vital to help students make an appropriate and informed choice for traineeship.
We always explain terms fully and never rely on unnecessary jargon, and we try to make the way that we interact with each other as informal as possible. There’s a culture in academia of seriousness and stoicism that I think is partially responsible for some alienation of the public, hence Elliott and I make an effort to be silly and informal.
Students have produced videos, lesson plans, information boards, leaflets, board games, websites, smartphone apps, community dinners, workshops and more. Project deliverables can have a long and sustained impact as clients will use the materials students have created for years to come.
The tools devised included a light-up installation, Making up your Mind , which enables young people to build personalised brain maps to be discussed at careers events, and IDK (I Don’t Know) , a mid-term creative festival of talks and workshops supported by a website, information pack and Snapchat filter.

A key part of her remit is to incubate innovation projects with colleagues from across the university and partners beyond, including the development of the Students as Change Agents Programme. What Next: Postgraduate support There has been an increasing demand over the last year for academic peer learning provision focused on postgraduate students, both taught and research. There are already a number of models developing informally from study skills workshops around dissertations to one to one academic mentoring.
