Patterson-Stephens work has focused on utilizing a data-informed approach by utilizing surveys, data collection and assessments to recommend suggestions. After earning a master’s degree in studentaffairs administration from Michigan State University, Patterson-Stephens went on to Florida State University where she earned a Ph.D.
In an exciting development, two prominent organizations in the higher education space, The Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) and StudentAffairs Assessment Leaders (SAAL) have joined together to enhance the landscape of higher education through collaboration and shared resources.
SAAL aims to routinely share recaps of key assessment conferences through blogs to disseminate our observations that benefit the broader studentaffairs assessment community. The purpose of the SAAL awards is to recognize the assessment work of members that advances the field of StudentAffairs assessment and furthers the mission and values of SAAL. Image: Up until February, a student walking into one of Northwestern University’s four dining halls would likely see a small sign beside each dish denoting its ingredients and calorie counts: 270 for a serving of baked ziti or 100 for low-fat vanilla yogurt. It might be a minor—even imperceptible—adjustment to some students.
Examples include assessing the representation of students in programs/services/spaces, and trends in student experiences over time. Similarly, clean dashboards only contain immediately necessary information, but a dashboard should also have links to documented sources and definitions or risk misinterpretations.
Given SAALs mission and vision center, in part, on the creation of a thriving community , I thought I would share with you a bit of what I learn from these conversations as well as some information about the humans in these roles, the faces behind the listserv emails so to speak. Raise Awareness about Campus Resources If your platform has a campus engagement platform or app, it should be the go-to resource for students. In addition to serving as a one-stop-shop for academic, co-curricular and student service information, the platform helps connect and engage students.
The key thing was I wanted to make sure I had a place where all program information and data could be housed. And I wanted to be able to communicate with groups of students versus having to do individual communications.” Once she realized she could work with college students as a career, she returned to school.
Peer mentoring often helps students navigate shared experiences, promoting collaboration and problem solving. Interactions are generally frequent and take place in both formal and informal settings such as coffees, lunches, or happy hours. Trust and interpersonal chemistry are important factors in choosing a mentor.
And two is the way that studentaffairs and these sort of unlikely spaces and places are providing value that both today’s learners want and tomorrow’s employers need. And for many of them, They’re reaching almost all of their students with these programs. We’ve it’s this transaction.
