Following her retirement as president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in July 2022, Jackson continued to have an impact on academia, industry, and public service. Jackson did that by co-founding the Black Student Union. A dean at MIT suggested she look at some industrial research labs.

First, membership of unions and other professional organisations was rare. Many participants lacked awareness of unions (‘I’ve never heard of a union for the cleaning industry’, stated one). Others held negative views of unions. In relation to political justice, the study generated two main findings.

The response from higher education institutions includes integrating advisory boards to better align curricula with industry needs. And even in Ohio, just recently with their bringing in a new president, that whole process, I actually had a phone call from a student. The student union wanted to hire me to fix this for them.
