It is crucial to pave clear pathways for students to obtain industry recognized credentials in today’s challenging economic landscape. One of the fundamental aspects of supporting students on their route to industry recognized credentials is starting these pathways early.
In this post, Kit Daniel Searle, University Teacher in Operational Research (OR)↗️ at the School of Mathematics↗️ shares their experience embedding a low-risk consultancy project within their course curriculum highlighting the perks of student-industry collaboration.

The Design Agency is all about the reality of the world of work so we needed to echo what was happening externally within the design industry. Parallels with industry were plentiful, which allowed us to continue to promote the Design Agency scheme at Open Days as producing graduates who are 100% employable. It’s a real leveller.
The large open spaces of rural towns expose their community college students to several unique industries that they can contribute to, such as those in agriculture, tourism/recreation and energy and mineral production. The rural town leveraged its open space to create a booming industry and build studentemployment opportunities.

In the case of Music, though, students usually identify very strongly with their specialism and expect it to remain central to their lives. And indeed, a profession in the music industry could mean a lot of different things, with many ‘ways in’ and no obvious, prescribed graduate career path.
