Require community experts in student-directed PBL designs: My students identify and connect with their own experts in the community as a source of information for their projects. Students can interview their community experts, shadow them, have the expert teach them a skill, or work with them on a concept in-person or virtually.

Some of my favorite projects over the course of my teaching career have been those that have truly embraced the idea of sharing work with a relevant and meaningful audience; those that have included an authentic presentation. Let's say a teacher assigns students to research invasive species.

Host a Fundraiser: Raising money is a great way to take action. Several of my students organized a holiday pie fundraiser at the time when the Syrian refugee crisis was front and center. They not only learned about the Syrian conflict but also how to organize an effective fundraiser.
