Learning design is the process of designing learning experiences (planning, structuring, sequencing) through facilitated activities that are pedagogically informed, explicit, and make better use of technologies in teaching.

Hoping to facilitate the building of an effective student-staff relationship at the start of the student university experience, as well as helping undergraduate students in getting to know their lecturers a bit better, all new students were invited to meet researchers from the BMS community over drinks and nibbles during a mid-semester event.

The Online Learning Network is an academic community offering staff at the University the opportunity to share ideas and practice about online teaching. This network is facilitated by IAD and hosts themed events. Encouraging collaboration through group activities. Ensuring the course team are visible.

In a different life as an academic developer, I have recently had the pleasure of joining two separate groups at the wonderful Firbush Outdoor Centre , one of Edinburgh University’s many hidden gems. I can’t deny that there is an element of enjoyment in choosing an outdoor centre in a stunning location for these events.

The Student Counselling Service , Accommodation Catering and Events (ACE), The Advice Place and the Chaplaincy provide a network of support for students experiencing academic and personal problems. These services often work together as part of a connected network, or community, of support for students.
Some did participate in some formal developmentevents about teaching but often it was the informal experiences that were the most important. -Academic from Science and Engineering I was very struck by the rich developmental processes these colleagues engaged in around their teaching.
Many of the staff we’ve spoken to admit that blogging with their course is extra work for them but that the extra work is worth it for the benefits, and the genuine excitement about viewing the blogs submitted by their students. Recently, I attended a ‘Sharing good practice from quality processes’ event here at the University. This in turn, has been shown to increase the feelings of belonging during students’ time at University, and, subsequently, raises educational success (e.g., Felten et al, 2016). Ultimately, each specific placement is different, and anybody coordinating a number of them will need to be nimble and able to react to events. Following placements, I found it useful to have a group meeting with students to reflect on what worked well and what could be improved.
