Events and resources to help you implement a theme Tina Harrison’s feature on ELIR identified some areas where the University could improve its teaching and learning. With this in mind, the deanery ran two new initiatives this year: “Meet the researcher Prize Draw” in semester 1, and “Student Staff Cake and Coffee Conversation” in semester 2. The event went very well, students and staff attending enjoyed the informal nature of the evening and the opportunity to meet new members of the deanery.

For interdisciplinary students and researchers, working outside of your usual context and challenging yourself to think differently about a problem is the day-to-day mode of operation. Our students and staff have been fantastic at contributing engaging pieces of writing covering everything from teaching, research and events to campaigning. Nursing Graduate, Zoe Horseman, is now a Research Assistant and District Nurse. Five years later, it serves the same purpose – as a community blog.
A big advantage of online learning is that it gives more control to the learner, so focus less on synchronous events (live sessions) and more on asynchronous activities (wikis, discussion boards, etc.). Rather, it is a way for them to make sense of their own teaching and their students’ learning, drawing on the principles of research.
They can also be a useful resource for researchers looking to better understand the relationship between teaching practices and learning. These were questions we helped to answer over the summer, as Research Assistants on the Classroom Practices and Lecture Recording project , which was funded by the Principal’s Teaching Award Scheme.

You need to accrue 40 points over a range of criteria, such as designing and planning learning activities, assessment and feedback and continuing professional development (CPD). As well as teaching and research, he is interested in science outreach. Assessment is through a reflective (private) blog and/or an oral presentation.

Recently, I attended a ‘Sharing good practice from quality processes’ event here at the University. Go Abroad Staff is one fantastic scheme offered to University staff, which funds and supports travel abroad. Felten et al, 2016). Academic communities can thrive in many forms.
Over two days in June, the Institute for Academic Development hosted the sixth annual Learning and Teaching Conference , ‘Investigate, inquire, innovate: exploring research-informed teaching practice’ The first day was in-person and live-streamed, and the second was fully online.

An important focus of Sarah’s work is to enhance IAD collaboration and engagement with colleagues in Schools and Colleges and beyond to support high quality teaching and research provision in Higher Education.
The Student Counselling Service , Accommodation Catering and Events (ACE), The Advice Place and the Chaplaincy provide a network of support for students experiencing academic and personal problems. Nina herself (along with Hazel Christie, from IAD) has researched the use of blogs in teaching and learning as part of a PTAS grant and has recorded a podcast episode for our mini-series (released today). Nina and Hazel are also working on re-usable assessment marking criteria to help staff assess blogs. Look out for it!
The Learn site currently contains seven folders: solutions to common problems; academic skills; getting the most of your assessment and feedback; tools to support learning and research; student support and the PT system; a careers roadmap; and information on peer support. We are already seeing the benefits of this system.
They are useful as a tool of reflection during the placement but many students return to them when writing their dissertations, to remind themselves how their research design evolved. Ultimately, each specific placement is different, and anybody coordinating a number of them will need to be nimble and able to react to events.
At EAUC, we appreciate this is harder for some, and, as such, have launched a series of events to support individual subjects to embed sustainability in their teaching called ‘ realigning curricula for the future ’. Research shows around 77% of students in higher education have experienced climate anxiety.
