Winter Walkways for Neighbors Organize a group of students to shovel snow and clear walkways for elderly neighbors or community members with limited mobility. Through planning and organizing this service-learning project, studentsdevelop responsibility, compassion, and communication skills as they coordinate with residents and work in teams.
For me, an international student from Nigeria, building a sense of community was an important aspect of what I set out to do in the U.S., My first year was marked by my significant involvement in Hope’s Phelps Scholars Program, which is a first-year program that helps studentsdevelop the tools needed to navigate our multicultural world.
As a final product, I have had my studentsdevelop tools (charts, quizzes, mind maps, etc.) My students choose one invasive species in the community to focus on. They might look at policies, removal events, education programs, and more. Students share their exhibits at a community exhibition event.
Heritage About a decade ago, one of my students shared with me that she loved cooking, specifically her grandmother's recipes. She organized and hosted an event where students in the school studied their heritage and culture and shared their final products at a community exhibition night.
Organize a School Club or Community Organization: I have had several students start and organize clubs for their community action projects. They created objectives and goals and organized club events related to their community action projects. Host a Fundraiser: Raising money is a great way to take action.
Students might collaborate with a local conservationist to design and develop a tool or method to effectively remove the species from the habitat while preserving and conserving the natural ecosystem. This is PBL, and the invasive species removal event is the authentic presentation. Not ideal and it's getting old.
Plan a Dinner Party Every year around this time my school hosts an event called “Feast” Each advisory organizes a dinner party within a set budget, we cook the recipes together and have a “feast” as a school community the day before winter break. The virtual events can even be really cool.

Students explore careers of interest, research the logistics that come with those careers, design and lead their own community action projects around issues relevant to a career of interest, develop 21st-century skills, and build a stunning and robust career portfolio to showcase these learning experiences.
