There was a dorm, library, lecture hall, and an admin building. Now, we have nicer campus facilities, larger research departments, public services for the community, and other ancillary services. So if you think about what college was in 1800, it was very bare bones. That was basically it. There were four or five buildings. Come on!
So, by the end of the week, we want our students to know where they’re going to have their lectures, where the lab is, where the libraries are, where the market is, and where the discount supermarkets are so that they feel like they have agency, can find their way around, and feel empowered to make Cambridge work for them.
Also important are common spaces like student unions, libraries, and their events and programs, like student support organizations, and peer-to-peer relationships and service delivery. I got to work on a lot of interesting libraries and campus plans. I really enjoyed that work. But we only had one tool in our toolbox to help: space.
