As higher education’s basketball tournament for men unfolded in March, US District Court Judge Claudia Wilken ruled that the tournament’s revenue model is almost but not quite illegal. The revenue model’s injustice seems obvious. 1100 colleges and universities earn about $800 million per year in TV money from the tournament, yet they agree to pay no wages to players who play in it.
