America has woken up to the unique benefits of HBCUs for Black students. Enrollment is up , and, after a century of underfunding , some money has been coming in, from sources both public and private. Suddenly, HBCUs have cultural cachet, thanks to celebrities like Beyoncé, who honored the schools in her 2019 concert documentary Homecoming , and Deion Sanders, who brought Jackson State University’s football team to national prominence before departing last December.

I was just starting to wonder when the U.S. Department of Education would release a new year of College Scorecard data, so I wandered over to the website to check for anything new. I was pleasantly surprised to see a date stamp of April 25 (today!), which meant that it was time for me to give my computer a workout. There are a lot of great new data elements in the updated Scorecard.

Strachan said she wants to figure out why fewer than 2% of all teachers in the U.S. are African American men and what can be done to improve that number. “While we know that they bring value to the classroom, they’re very much absent in the classroom as educators, as teachers,” said Strachan, acting chair of the Department of Teacher Education & Leadership at Alabama A&M University.

Four Pennsylvania men have been charged after a Black Lehigh University student was allegedly called a racial slur, chased to his dorm, and assaulted, CNN reported. Brandon John, 22, was charged with simple assault and harassment; Michael Rosta, 21, with burglary and simple assault; Nabil Jameel, 22, with simple assault; and Cameron Graf, 22, with simple assault and harassment.

University of Tennessee Health Science Center ’s (UTHSC) dentistry school has opened a $45-million Delta Dental of Tennessee Building on its Memphis campus, WREG reported. The 68,000-square-foot facility – named after Delta Dental of Tennessee and CEO Dr. Philip Wenk, chair of the UTHSC Advisory Board and a 1977 graduate of the College of Dentistry – will have more space and facilities to train students and treat patients, including a clinic for patients with special needs.

The Idaho Board of Education has unanimously passed a resolution prohibiting Idaho’s four-year schools from requiring job applicants to sign written diversity statements, the Idaho Capital Sun reported. The resolution – it goes into effect immediately – will affect Boise State University, the University of Idaho, Idaho State University, and Lewis-Clark State College.
