The Directors of Teaching Network: sharing good practice and discussing challenges in teaching across the university

Teaching Matters Academic Communities

The Directors of Teaching Network is a new initiative started by the Assistant Principal for Assessment and Feedback, Professor Susan Rhind in 2016. The network brings together Directors of Teaching (or DoTs) and other interested teachers from each school in the University for quarterly meetings. Directors, who have strategic oversight in teaching at the school level, can update each other on their local experiences, wins and challenges in learning and teaching, and discuss various university in

“It’s a Wonderful Workshop”: innovative tutor training for the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice

Teaching Matters Academic Support

Teaching on the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice is primarily conducted in the practical, hands-on learning environment of a workshop (anything from 1 ¼ to 3 hours long), led by a tutor who is most likely to be a practising solicitor. This presents some interesting challenges for me as Tutor Mentor in the Edinburgh Centre for Professional Legal Studies (ECPLS).

Happy Birthday, Rome!

Hope College Network

On Friday, Rome celebrated it’s 2,770th birthday! The official founding date of Rome is April 21st, 753 B.C. All weekend there were historical re-enactments culminating in a huge parade reminding me that the Roman people truly cherish and take pride in the rich history of the city they call home. The Most Brief History of Rome You’ll Ever Read Legend has it that twins, Romulus and Remus, were raised by a she-wolf.

Peer Instruction

Teaching Matters Online Learning

During lectures, it’s very common to ask questions to the students. But only a comparatively small number of students can ever answer directly, and even then it’s often ‘the usual suspects’. What about students who don’t get a chance to respond, or who don’t wish to speak up in front of the whole class? It’s also common to ask students to discuss things with each other, but are they discussing productively – do they have enough guidance on what to discuss – and can you get a feel for what they t

Support at scale: School-wide support for postgraduates who teach

Teaching Matters Student Employment

Managing tutors and demonstrators on a large scale can be challenging, but also rewarding for both students and the School. Both the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in the School of Geosciences are strongly supported by tutors and demonstrators (T&Ds) and the experience for students can be a rewarding means of developing their organisation, interpersonal and leadership skills.

‘Empowering postgraduate tutors’ in History

Teaching Matters Academic Communities

‘Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn’ – Benjamin Franklin Though writing in eighteenth century America, Franklin’s ideas continue to resonate today, reflecting the questions many of us ask about our teaching practice – how do we teach, and how to do get our undergraduate students to ‘learn through doing’ and therefore to engage with the course material rather than merely listening?

The Creation of a Postgraduate Tutor Mentor Post in the School of Divinity

Teaching Matters Academic Communities

Dr Linden Bicket, Teaching Fellow in the School of Divinity, oversees the support and development of postgraduate tutors. In 2014, I was appointed as Teaching Fellow here in New College. A large part of my work has been the revamping and development of support for our tutors, who teach level 8 (pre-honours) tutorials in Biblical Studies, History of Christianity, Religious Studies, and Theology and Ethics.

Spring Is Here and So Were My Parents!

Hope College Network

I was lucky enough to spend my spring break traveling in Italy with my parents! We started in Rome and toured the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. It’s hard to describe visiting a place that holds such renowned artwork and museums showcasing items that span a longer period of time than Christianity itself. Click to view slideshow. The next morning we boarded a train to Venice where we spent a few days exploring the Floating City.
