Happy Monday, readers! Miraculously, after writing last week’s blog, I feel a lot better about being busy this semester. I feel like writing that blog post put a lot of things in perspective for me and I’m at terms with my workload for the semester. My new goal is to get most of my homework done during the weekends so that my weeks are a little less hectic.

College and university closures. According to a recent article in The Chronicle of Higher Education, closures of four-year, private, and not-for-profit universities and colleges in 2017 are expected to triple from the current average rate of five per year. The authors, Jamie Morley and Bill Ojile argue that imperiled institutions of higher education must think ahead and plan strategically if they want to conduct an orderly closing, assembling the legal advice and public relations support needed

(credit: Yao Hui) “If anything, please do maximise on learning and mastering skills because a superior skillset is the only authentic job security.” These were my father’s words of advice as I departed for university. The thought of pursuing my studies at an institution far away from home always evoked a sense of fear. I feared what would happen to me beyond my own nest, comfort zone, country and even my continent.

The one-year Masters in a UK university is intensive; even more so for an international student in a new teaching and cultural environment. According to many large scale studies on student decision making and outlines in policy statements, higher education is a step towards enhancing career prospects: in order words, developing employability. But, at a personal level, how does an international student perceive they develop their employability during a one-year Masters-level study in a UK univers

In this post, Lynsey Russell-Watts, Careers Consultant for ECA, discusses her involvement in the recent Graphic Design in a Box project. This aimed to improve design-related careers resources in schools, but the final-year students involved also gained a wide range of career benefits from their participation. Making the leap from one side of the academic fence to the other has allowed me to keenly appreciate the concerns and priorities of those on each side.

Part 1: The Purpose of Higher Ed The purpose of Higher Ed is the first in The Changing Face of Higher Ed series as it’s the most important to the success and sustainability of higher education institutions. Higher education is in a state of transition. What traditionally has been a stable part of Western society for so many years now must find ways to remain relevant in a time of expanding knowledge, changing societal values, and increased questioning of authority figures.

Since academic year 2011-12, when the Edinburgh award was launched, I’ve always asked the students in my award classes whether they agree with a statement from a paper by Simon Barrie, 2006; “ …. generic graduate attributes have come to be accepted as being the skills, knowledge and abilities of university graduates, beyond disciplinary content knowledge, which are applicable in a range of contexts and are acquired as a result of completing any undergraduate degree.

Playfulness has always been closely tied to the activity of learning for me. The fact that my mother was also my kindergarten teacher may have had something to do with this. Whenever I have an opportunity to bring something playful to a learning experience I leap at the chance. So when my colleague, Gavin Willshaw, suggested running a Board Game Jam as part of Innovative Learning Week 2016, I thought it was a fantastic idea.

This year we have begun a new collaboration between the Institute of Academic Development (IAD) and Clinical and Health Psychology; working closely together we have developed and delivered skill-based training workshops for students on the MSc Psychology of Mental Health (conversion) programme. The goals of these workshops were to provide an opportunity for new students to develop effective academic skills that they can utilise within their degree, but also in their future careers.

Happy Monday, friends! It’s a good day to stay inside and read a book, watch some Netflix or perhaps… write a blog! It’s been a while since I have written a blog, but when I do decide to write, there have been multiple consistent themes. Getting an internship is high on the agenda for students looking for quality work experience before they graduate. College and university leaders are seeking to create meaningful change in higher education while continuing to face demands to be more accountable. At the national level, the U.S. Congress is considering the Higher Education Reform and Opportunity (HERO) Act, parts of which move accountability to the state level. This proposal, if passed, would give individual states the responsibility to create accrediting systems, curricula, apprenticeships, programs, and individual courses.

At New Year many people make resolutions for the 12 months ahead – sometimes to ‘stop’ something, sometimes to ‘start’. But all resolutions are about ‘becoming’, and in particular becoming someone who has different characteristics and qualities than before. Being a student at the University of Edinburgh is also a process of ‘becoming’ – becoming an Edinburgh Graduate – a process owned by each student and supported by all of us in the University.

Declining college enrollment numbers aren’t a cause for panic. In many ways, the 2016 election season underscored the need for more and better education. Many Americans appear to lack the foundational knowledge and critical thinking skills needed to be able to differentiate real news from propaganda, and whole sectors of our society have been left without the skills to compete in the twenty-first-century workforce.

Venture philanthropy for college and university funding is a new trend in higher education, and the following blog discusses the pros and cons of how this can help your college or university. Writing in 2012 for the American Association of University Professors, Kevin Kumashiro voices a concern that still resonates for many academics, the fear that venture philanthropy is bound to introduce programs framed by corporate profitability.
