Let students lead their learning

Teaching Matters Student Employment

The case for Student-led individually created courses Raphy, my nephew, is 18 months old. Just under a year ago he started learning how to walk. I remember my Dad buying him a new ‘walker’ – a shiny red toy car in the shape of a trolley, designed to give little ones extra balance. Raphy loved it and would play with it for hours on end. He would push his little red car for a few steps, then fall sideways, backwards, sometimes doing an ungainly forward roll.

Midterm Break Adventures

Hope College Network

I’ve missed you, readers! I apologize for my writing absence during the last week as I was living out of a backpack (clothes and all) and didn’t have room for my laptop. It’s so good to be back, and I’m PUMPED to tell you all about my travels. Here’s how I’m going to structure this: since I didn’t write at all last week and I have three places that I went over break, instead of two blogs this week, you’ll get three!

The Syllabus: The Most Important Handout in College

As a freshman, you’ll make yourself a lot of promises like “I’ll sleep early, get up at 5 a.m., and work out at the Dow every day,” or “I’ll eat healthy every single day and never waste money on a pizza delivery,” or better yet “I’ll keep my work area organized and never lose a single paper!” I’m sorry to break it to you, but most of the promises you’ll make in the beginning of fall semester will never see the light of day p

Hope College Through the Eyes of Jake

Hope College Network

The man. The myth. The legend. My friend Jake. Jake is a pretty involved guy here at Hope College. He is a Nykerk Play Morale Coach, he is a staple member of the Dew Crew (perennially in the front row), he plays bass on the Worship Team, and he is the founder of the #fashionboys movement on Snapchat. I sat down with him to find out some of his perspectives and words of wisdom on the real Hope College issues and ways of life.

How much sleep should one get over the night? Some people say that “I need only 6 hours of sleep a day in order to function well the next day.” Others need 8 hours, but how much sleep do we actually need a night? Continuing on the topic of my previous article about the right amount of sleep a night, my senior year I had a significant sleeping issue. I was getting about 3-5 hours of a sleep a night because I could not fall asleep at 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., so I would stay awake until 2 or 3 a.m., sometimes 5 a.m. This is post is not about me or my previous problems, but I went to a therapist and this what she advised me, so if you have hard time falling asleep this what helped me.

A Day in the Life of a Hope College Student

Recently on the Hope College Facebook page for admitted students, I received a message from a future student asking about my typical day. I told her that I would write a blog post about it, since other future students are probably wondering the same thing. And that’s how this post came to be! I hope you enjoy hearing about what a typical weekday would look like for me, which is definitely different than what a typical day looks like for another student here.

My Favorite Chicago Spots: A Winter Break Memoir

If you’d asked me two years ago, I would have said that I hated Chicago. I would never want to live there. I didn’t even like visiting for the day. I’d take a shopping trip to the suburbs at the drop of a hat, but you couldn’t make me go into the actual city. Ugh. This is one perk of dating a guy who lives in Chicago: Because I’ve been fortunate enough to visit him several times throughout the past year and a half, I’ve also discovered some really wonderful s

Weekend Preface

Six weeks in. I’ve been going to classes in Ireland for six weeks already. I’m baffled, I’m incredulous, I’m flabbergasted!
