If approved by the state legislature, Mississippi University for Women will rebrand as Mississippi Brightwell University. The W, located in historic Columbus, Mississippi, was founded in 1884 as the first state-supported college for women in the United States.

While I had been on the campus of Tougaloo College as a guest, I was hired at the college, often called the “Cradle of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi,” as a tenure-track assistant professor in 1999.
