We took the opportunity presented by the Student Partnership Agreement (SPA) to engage IFP alumni in the construction of this student-led project. Several themes arose from these initial focus groups, including writing and presentation practice, transferability of skills, and criticality and analysis.
However, the emphasis is on the development of learning through group interaction and moving beyond these reflective questions. Students are encouraged to divide up the reading, making detailed notes, and presenting the papers they have read to the group. Each group meets with the course organiser who facilitates the discussion.
Cathy: Since the final presentations by the students we have ensured the student reports have been shared among a range of groups. The University’s Curriculum Transformation Project StudentEngagement Strategy group have discussed how some of the ideas might be taken forward.

The majority of SPS in Practice was run by these students, through group work where they identified topics core to the Understanding Gender course, and then piloted and tested themed learning resources and activities. The range of case studies covered in the course encourages students to select topics that interest them, whilst refining skills in synthesis and written communication through succinct policy briefs. The course aims to provide multiple avenues for studentengagement with sustainability in the classroom, in the field and across the university.
Offering choice presents a series of challenges and opportunities to the curriculumdeveloper. For example, how do we work with the professional community to support the 850+ students that are undertaking the Bachelor of Medicine programme at any one time?
Alette continues : Nature, Greenspace and Health picks up this strand in the honours years, enabling students to get hands-on experience at working as a team on an issue of concern to the local community by: Exploring that issue through developing their understanding of the problem. Presenting their work to members of the community.
Emphasis on ‘quality of argument, strength of evidence and clarity of presentation’ were the core tenants of lectures for about a third of the course. This showed students’ common logical flaws and biases, how to construct effective arguments from premises and conclusions, and gave advice on effectively sourcing information.

Recently, during a large second year genetics quecture, students fed back that they strongly favoured quectures, over traditional or flipped delivery. Course questionnaire feedback (including those not present during the session) was less enthusiastic. Worthwhile learning is rarely comfortable.
It is organised as a 20 credit elective course in year two, that spans both semesters to enable participating students to undertake a meaningful placement in a school, to initiate development of their own teaching skills in working with school pupils, and to develop and deliver a cultural learning experience in their school class placement.
Additionally, 80% of students found CBCS beneficial for developing essential employability skills. Students embarking on their Masters programmes face a number of challenges in their academic study, particularly if English is not their first language, it has been some time since they last undertook formal study, or if they come from another academic culture or field of study.
I also now appreciate the importance of studentsengaging in thinking about their future careers as early as possible. This led me to reflect on my previous teaching experience: how often had I asked students to really reflect on their learning and on the range of skills and experiences it provided?

As each student progresses through the role of Design Agency intern, junior, senior, and director, their level of responsibility and workload increases. Each encounter of this spiral curriculum is assessed through reflective documentation often using diaries, blogs, films and pecha-kucha style presentations.
This approach brings a number of other educational benefits and challenges, for example: Students are motivated by having to engage with the ‘real world’ and present their ideas to outside stakeholders. Students have more direct access to the messiness of the problem though the external stakeholders.
