In the Business School, we recognised that we weren’t always making it easy for students to decipher where and how they were developing these skills, both in and beyond their taught curricula. Some courses in the School of Social and Political Sciences adopt this model, such as SPS Research in Practice, and Contemporary Issues in Sociology, and many others combine elements of it where students can pursue some of their own ideas in class. The course staff feel that a more private blog is a good way for students to express ideas and reflect on them (in a safe space), and really helps the course staff and the student to connect. iStock [BrianAJackson] Several previous posts on Teaching Matters have focused on graduate attributes – the skills, abilities, attitudes and approaches that studentsdevelop “through meaningful experiences and the processes of learning and reflection” (from Definition: what are Graduate Attributes? ).
As the university consults widely on its curriculum transformation project, there is a valuable opportunity to reach a more nuanced understanding of what the Edinburgh attributes could be and their intersection with the curriculum. It is understandable that students focus on shorter-term objectives to ensure successful progression.
Developed to support both students and staff, it now receives well over a million visits a year and its impact is extending within and beyond higher education. The Reflection Toolkit targets two audiences – reflectors and facilitators of others’ reflection – recognising that students and staff can occupy both roles.
Our aim is for students to be ‘affected’ by their education. That is, we want the students to feel things with their own hands, by making and creating new gadgets; to feel the emotions of what it really means being an engineer today, by proposing solutions to address global challenges such as social inequality and global warming.
