This showed students’ common logical flaws and biases, how to construct effective arguments from premises and conclusions, and gave advice on effectively sourcing information. These lessons could be some of your most important university lectures if this aspect of academia was not emphasised in a student’s previous education.

The other half would be semi-active, and a few students would dominate the discussion, regurgitating information from the readings either to please the tutor or save the group from awkward silences. This tutorial only seemed different because it was called a “Facilitated Group Discussion” (FGD).
During the presentation itself, the theorists would say a few words setting the background to the paper – no need to present the papers in full as we had read them in advance – and then two students would present prepared responses. After class, we headed to a nearby café for an informal lunch and further debate.
