The project had several outcomes, including fantastic examples of student and staff engagement, enhanced course descriptors, and revised policies, which laid important ground work for the current PCIM project. It will enhance the information available by improving and streamlining how we propose, maintain, and close courses and programmes.
However, what do they do when they look to developstudents’ ‘mindsets’? What evidence do we have to show our studentsdevelop these graduate attributes? Most programmes, to varying degrees, will address subject-specific and more widely applicable academic skills (e.g. communication, teamworking).
As Scotland marks 20 years of its enhancement-led approach to quality in the higher education sector, I reflect on my involvement, particularly around work supporting studentdevelopment, employability, and personal and professional success.
I was really excited to be involved because it’s a service that I think offers so many benefits, both to the staff and students who use the service and the institution in general. Dr Simon Riley is using it in part of the Student-Led, Individually-Created Courses (SLICCs) project. Look out for it!
In the Business School, we recognised that we weren’t always making it easy for students to decipher where and how they were developing these skills, both in and beyond their taught curricula. This has been a helpful prompt to ensure skills and graduate attributes are reported upon, and robustly discussed, in course development.
But colleagues also struggle to know where to go for information, advice, or support – reflection doesn’t typically ‘belong’ to one part of an institution and therefore sources of expertise covering diverse needs can be hard to find. That’s where the Reflection Toolkit comes in. Dec 16, 2022
We also showed other voices that challenge some of these voices – other students, family members, passers-by – with other kinds of knowledge and perspectives on the issues Mila grapples with. The book shows the importance of learning from others, involving intellectual foils and critical friends in students’ development.
