A group helped identify environmental and socioeconomic risks associated with food and drink purchased by the University, which helped the Department of Social Responsibility and Sustainability and Procurement complete their planned analysis using the Scottish Public Procurement Prioritization Tool.
We have been learning a lot about the kinds of wicked problems that colleagues are working on across the University which include among others: sustainability; company failures; food security; public health; and social inequality.
In 2016 Ewan and a TA, Alyssa Alcorn, developed a level 8 cross-school course , Data, Design and Society , on the topic ‘Food and the University’. The goal was not necessarily to produce a ‘solution’ but to problematise an issue in a novel way using data and design.
As a student she was involved in various student-led organisations including People and Planet Edinburgh, the Student-Staff Solidarity Network, the Rattlecap online magazine, and the Hearty Squirrel Food Cooperative.
Since we were somewhat apprehensive (in retrospect, unjustifiably) about letting teams of undergraduates run riot in the city, we decided to focus on an issue that could be researched within the confines of the University and chose Food and Sustainability as the challenge.
Here, students from very different backgrounds spend time debating and learning whilst cooking wholesome locally bought food, eating together, and sharing dormitory accommodation.
