Latinos are key when it comes the nation’s engineering and technology workforce, according to a new joint report from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the Latino Donor Collaborative (LDC). anticipates a coming shortage of workers in engineering and tech – there are projected to be 10.9 are immense.
“With the economy shifting … we need workforce education training faster and better,” said James Fong, chief research officer at the University Professional and ContinuingEducation Association (UPCEA). “They want to be able to say what skills are important … Faculty can’t drive everything.”
He also ushered in record levels of student and faculty diversity, research expenditures, first-year student enrollment and retention rates as the dean of the engineering department. As an administrator, the first-time president helped create new degree and continuingeducation programs, as well as forged corporate partnerships.
So there’s a real paradigm shift among institutional staff, faculty. So trying to really even linguistically continue to erode the artificial distinction between credit and non credit. to then continue after this short term non-credit program into a credit bearing certificate or degree program. There’s policies.
Projects addressed topics such as annual giving, student retention, professional and continuingeducation, academic program planning, and more. The involvement of faculty in the enrollment and retention process is critical. But higher ed has unfortunately created an environment that does not necessarily reward faculty for their capacity to develop and maintain relationships with students. Your average higher education website is approximately 70,000 pages or more.
Global education has that discussion. We use a model where faculty actually advise students their third and their fourth year. And so you have multiple touch points on campus that continue to be able to see that transcript and use that transcript and ask those very detailed questions. The academic advisors have that discussion.
A program designed with the university’s deans, faculty, and community engagement managers is also more valuable. They have their Master’s program with a core faculty team teaching the baseline courses and then adjuncts who teach exactly what’s going on in Silicon Valley. That is one model. Harvard comes to mind here.
Post students have access to a locked closet with gently used professional men’s and women’s attire that have been donated by staff and faculty members. As a faculty member, Camille developed and taught courses for her alma mater, Iona College, in the health services management graduate program.
Will the continuouseducation approach be taken up more broadly by a wider range of industries? Accompanying revisionism was an altered relationship between faculty and students. To raise revenue, campuses became more entrepreneurial, expanding continuingeducation, offering summer programs, renting campus space, and more. We used Credential Engine data, which is the largest national registry on credentials, and then some publicly available education, higher education data from IPEDs to extract information about program cost, location, and indirect costs.
