In this post, Lynsey Russell-Watts, Careers Consultant for ECA, discusses her involvement in the recent Graphic Design in a Box project. This aimed to improve design-related careers resources in schools, but the final-year students involved also gained a wide range of career benefits from their participation.
Defining: Bringing together all the information gathered from the consultations, as well as our supervisors’ and our personal ideas. Developing: Sketching out course themes and topics, learning objectives and outcomes, assessments, support and interaction methods.
The 25 students on the Nature, Green Space and Health course will be assisting in development of the biodiversity strategy in relation to its biophilia and placemaking strand; this strand emphasises the value of biodiversity and green spaces to health, wellbeing and a sense of place.
These projects also develop research and critical skills obtained when writing essays. Moreover, studentsengage with the ‘real word’ and solve ‘real problems’ compared to artificial ones posed by a lecturer. These are skills required to function in the professional world and match attributes outlined by the University.
At this early stage, the student receives feedback from their SLICC staff tutor, who offers them guidance on how they may gain greater insight during the learning experience and maximise the available opportunities. Gavin McCabe Dr Gavin McCabe leads the University’s Employability Consultancy.
This assignment gave me first-hand experience of the world of consultancy, and I have now used the experience gained to propose new, effective sustainable measures to management. This has helped the company achieve its goal to become carbon neutral.
Seconded to the Institute for Academic Development he is developing his interests in reflection, experiential learning, and student agency, to develop SLICCs institution-wide.
However, he acknowledged that this solution has its own set of problems, emphasizing the need for university boards to play a more supportive role, balancing their oversight functions with consulting and assisting the president in managing the institution’s operations.
