In this episode, we dig into the impacts of dual enrollment on a student’s pathway to and through highereducation. We are joined by Tatiana Velaso, Senior Research Associate at the CommunityCollege Research Center to discuss the latest research into the postsecondary outcomes of dual enrollment students.
Dual enrollment, sometimes referred to as dual credit or concurrent enrollment, refers to a program enabling high school students to take college courses and earn college credit while also fulfilling requirements for high school graduation. This number is even higher in some states, reaching upwards of 40%.
And unfortunately, highereducation is feeling the impact, too. The cost of tuition for colleges and universities rose 2.3% And that increase doesn’t even take into account higher costs for everything from faculty and administrative salaries to supplies, materials, and utilities.

The challenges with transfer are well-documented and well-publicized across highereducation. And even if they are able to transfer institutions, it’s likely that they’ll lose some of their hard-earned credits – up to 13 units or 43% of their credits, according to the National Center for Education Studies (NCES).

Dual enrollment is a key player to success for students in high school and their matriculation into highereducation. And the reason I’m noting this is because these are our students that many times their families are not educated yet. Well, what’s the purpose of college? We have over 40 that we partner with.
It’s crazy to think how expensive highereducation is. There’s just so many things that go on with highereducation that we don’t do a good job of capturing. What did I really like? I would probably argue they’re giving them the skills, but the students just can’t talk about those skills.
So we play and our accreditation as well as our national quality standards play an important role in filling this hole in state policy as specifically addressing what you should be doing with students if you are offering these programs as well as another kind of oversight area is regional accreditors for institutions of highereducation.
There’s a big question in the 60s, especially as you get non -traditional students, both GIs coming back from the war, but just an expansion of who is in highereducation as desegregation kind of falls away or is being displaced at a lot of institutions. So I’m really excited that that’s how it all worked out because everyone wants to be in higher ed as a career when they’re when they’re child and children. But for me really, my career actually started interestingly enough where I didn’t wanna be in highereducation.
