It can be frustrating to dedicate time, money, and effort to careerservices in higher education and see headlines like “ Colleges get F for career prep ” go mainstream. . After all, this work with students is essential. And yet, the current approach to careerservices is lacking in impact.
This project was particularly important to me because of the impact CliftonStrengths had made in my life and how the tool was being used to support post-secondary students’ development. Nina herself (along with Hazel Christie, from IAD) has researched the use of blogs in teaching and learning as part of a PTAS grant and has recorded a podcast episode for our mini-series (released today). Dr Simon Riley is using it in part of the Student-Led, Individually-Created Courses (SLICCs) project.

With the new student support model being rolled out across the entire university this year, we wanted to make sure we took time to recognise the efforts of these staff, who have supported students’ development, demonstrated commitment to their welfare and wellbeing, and built a sense of community within their cohort.

In addition to the content from the subject-matter expertise and professional skills development sessions, the fellows also had access to EAB’s research library and experts, and they were paired with a partner to help develop ideas and get feedback along the way.

It’s a combination of the technical skills, which students may have learned in an academic setting, and application of them in a practical sense, which likely hasn’t happened. It’s so important that studentsdevelop these soft skills and even harder skills as well.
