For over a decade, students have worked alongside staff at the college’s career center to provide professional development help for the larger campus community, part of a long-standing institutional tradition. Student success in higher education refers to students' achievement, growth, and overall well-being during their college or university experience. It entails providing a supportive environment that allows students to attain their full potential and prepares them for future success.
Of course I believed students were developing ‘transferable skills’, but I was largely concerned with the nitty-gritty of the immediate skills they had to develop to perform well in their assessments! On the ‘other side’, as a careers consultant, I see things rather differently. We can’t afford to ignore this concern.
Internships have historically been a great opportunity for companies to bring quality entry-level talent into an organization, making them vital to student and employer success. It's no secret that the demand for interns is high, with some companies already in the race for interns for the 2025 season.
The School of Mathematics has long recognised the need for providing its students with support beyond that offered by the University’s established channels: our subject, by its very nature, poses challenges to incoming students in their transition from School-level to University-level Mathematics.
While sometimes this can be attributed to finding opportunities that better align with their long-term career goals, a lot of the time interns renege out of a lack of engagement with their future employers. In a competitive workforce, it's not uncommon for interns to renege on accepted offers in hopes of finding something better.
How could we replicate the success of this Edinburgh Award with our far larger Undergraduate student population without diluting the quality? Answer: Get our students involved in its design and delivery. These are delivered by a newly formed and hugely dedicated branch of PALS, our DevPALS, led by third year student, Sophie Mitchinson.
EUSA Teaching Awards 2024 In this blog Callum Paterson, Academic Engagement & Policy Coordinator at the Students’ Association, turns the spotlight to the winners of the Students’ Association’s 2024 Teaching Awards for staff offering exceptional levels of support to students.
Rather, it is a way for them to make sense of their own teaching and their students’ learning, drawing on the principles of research. Financial awards of up to £15,000 help participants to develop research skills and build communities of staff and students with an interest in enhancing teaching and learning.
Driving studentengagement with these wellness services redirects some of the demand for formal counseling and can prevent many issues from escalating to the point of needing acute care. Coordinating these services can help schools provide much better support for students without the need for major new investments.
Both students and staff at the University of Edinburgh recognise the benefits these projects offer across a wide range of academic, professional, and personal skills.
The Edinburgh Award is an initiative that recognises students’ involvement with co- and extra-curricular activities while at University. It also seeks to enhance the learning and development opportunities these activities provide and encourage students to see the relevance of these activities in preparing them for their future.
Foster: With SACHA it’s not all about what the university can give students through lectures and seminars but what the students can also give back to the university. It is a “give and take initiative” with the aim to involve students in the decision-making process in the University.
Students who got academic counseling were 20% more likely to report greater levels of engagement and satisfaction with their educational experience. This has been proved right according to the National Survey of StudentEngagement (NSSE). It helps improve academic standing, professional interests, and personal objectives.

For example, careerservices programming is often developed with the purpose of improving student skill in each of the career competencies as described by NACE. Or if the contents of these books are enhancing their educational journey?
It’s a mixed picture… Recently, a 4th year student in a very practical subject told me he had never had any hands-on experience in his degree. Moreover, in exam periods students are not necessarily thinking about employable attributes. about 74% of students start working after their first degree. I doubt it.
The career and PD team also presents career outcomes and experiences to inform other departments of its findings and to get feedback from them. In addition, the career and PD team asks what other departments are hearing from students and how the career and PD team can help if they have questions.
Lack of follow up is detrimental, and research shows that mail and email follow up are important to prospective students. Referrals from social services agencies and community-based organizations. Students who started an admissions application but did not complete. Community members who leverage careerservices resources.
Although experiential learning can often appear to be a rather ill-defined and vague construct, there are several key elements that need to be in place to ensure its effectiveness.
