I was motivated not only to gain professional accreditation via a Fellowship of the HigherEducation Academy, but also to reflect on my teaching practice and pedagogical approaches within the context of my new role that involved designing and delivering training for postgraduate researchers and research staff across career stages.

Employability is important to all highereducation stakeholders, and a core factor when students are selecting their degree subject and place of study. Employability is not just the job of a CareersService. Alongside internship modules, we deliver a range of Career Management modules.

The one-year Masters in a UK university is intensive; even more so for an international student in a new teaching and cultural environment. According to many large scale studies on student decision making and outlines in policy statements, highereducation is a step towards enhancing career prospects: in order words, developing employability.
The PhD Horizons Careers Conference is a great place for PhD students to find out more about their future career options. I also hope that the University continues to organise events like this and to work with PhD students to advise them on the importance of career planning from the early stages of their degrees.
