Compounded by the wider pressures facing Gen Z, these curricula developments have given urgency to the need for update links between ECA/Music and the University CareersService , and also to generate new networks and resources that can better serve both students and academic staff.
Gavin is the Careers and Employability Manager from the CareersService and this post forms part of the 20 Years of Enhancement theme. The University avoided the trap of seeing employability as solely a CareersService responsibility, and instead used this funding to support an institution-wide and collaborative approach.
For example, each year, one school addresses the large portion of their students concerned about career planning by organising the CareersConsultant for that school and running a workshop for students on that topic. We know from students that it is critical for their engagement with the review to be at least acknowledged.
Careersconsultants dip into their practitioners’ toolbox to ask the right questions, challenge assumptions, and prompt reflections on what is – and what could be. It recognises that career planning is often influenced by unplanned events, but encourages qualities such as curiosity, flexibility, persistence, and optimism.
In this post, Lynsey Russell-Watts, CareersConsultant for ECA, discusses her involvement in the recent Graphic Design in a Box project. This aimed to improve design-related careers resources in schools, but the final-year students involved also gained a wide range of career benefits from their participation.

Like other small private institutions, Gustavus Adolphus, a Lutheran college in southern Minnesota, faces a shrinking pool of traditional-age students, even ahead of the projected decline in college-age students due to kick in later this decade.
As part of the round of interviews, pupils also quiz a CareersService Advisor to find out about career options open to linguists. Apart from this credit-bearing “Languages Beyond University” course, we have developed a number of mostly student-led outreach initiatives for local schools.
Employability is not just the job of a CareersService. Planning and managing one’s career is a skill in itself, and Sharon’s blog post illustrates how student’s need support and reassurance as they develop their self-awareness. The Edinburgh Award is an initiative that recognises students’ involvement with co- and extra-curricular activities while at University. We are embedding the CareersService and History Practitioners into our core courses, offering a completely novel approach to teaching transferable skills. In summer 2016, the History Subject Area embarked on the largest overhaul of its curriculum in a generation. The course is fully integrated into the first-year curriculum.
