The center will provide personalized advising, mentoring, opportunities, and resources for various career pathways to Brown’s undergraduates, Ph.D. Instead of offering just generalized careerservices, this revamped center will seek to have knowledge bases and advising about specific industry sectors.
Your counselor is a resource that you can consult for all kinds of things, and they may know of scholarships that you can apply for that haven’t crossed your radar. The campus employment or careerservices office will list job openings, and there is no reason you cannot apply before you arrive on campus.
In fact, careerservices professionals can be just another advocate for students struggling with their mental health and lead them to future success, particularly in the workforce. The challenges of the “real world” will only heighten as students graduate and move onto careers. You can find the recording below!

Helen Stringer Helen Stringer is Assistant Director of the CareersService, and has a remit for developing academic partnerships. Helen also manages a team of careersconsultants, and worked with Dr Lynsey Russell-Watts – careersconsultant for ECA – on the career resilience project.

As part of the round of interviews, pupils also quiz a CareersService Advisor to find out about career options open to linguists. In five minute intervals, a foreign language pop song prompts them to move and interview another set of students. The morning finishes with guided campus tour by the students.
Employability is not just the job of a CareersService. Planning and managing one’s career is a skill in itself, and Sharon’s blog post illustrates how student’s need support and reassurance as they develop their self-awareness. Consultation with staff, students and externals in 2008/09 helped the University create the Graduate Attributes Framework , describing ‘an Edinburgh Graduate’.
