Host a Fundraiser: Raising money is a great way to take action. Several of my students organized a holiday pie fundraiser at the time when the Syrian refugee crisis was front and center. They not only learned about the Syrian conflict but also how to organize an effective fundraiser.

I have had students develop and run summer camps, computer maintenance businesses, take-and-bake pie shops, and photography companies, just to name a few.
