If it’s for the students, then we need to return to the drawing board and devise new methods that cater to a variety of different learning modes. A lecture hall is not the only place where material can be learned, and books, pencils, and laptops are not the only tools students need to be successful.
While one may have asked too many questions to the students on topics they should instead have been simply informed about, perhaps making the lectures ‘too easy’, another would cover vast amounts of academic literature in a single lecture, citing dozens of books and articles, and making some students feel a bit lost.
For starters, it involves a lot of admin: sending invitations, settling dates, booking hotels and cafes, and bugging guests to book their travel and send in papers on time. To add to the workload, we organised further events – seminars, lectures and, in one case, a book launch – around the visits.
