The first half of my career was spent in Alumni Relations, and then I spent the last 7 in Career Services. In your view, what are some of the biggest changes student success roles in higher ed in the last five years? Before you joined Symplicity, what was your role in higher ed and what topics are you most passionate about?
In this blog post, three SACHA alumni (Foster Osei, Mtevee Amugune, and Nisha Daniel), who participated in the SACHA programme as online distance learners, discuss the impact of experiential learning on the distance learner experience and share lessons that can be translated to other areas of the curriculum.
We have a pool of trained alumni who are available both in Edinburgh and abroad, who can help to support students. We invite former alumni too, bringing together various generations of students, to share questions and experiences. This is where our mentoring program comes in. Overall, we’re building a community.
How is the connection between current students and alumni? Do alumni easily offer internships or other opportunities to current students? There is a very strong alumni network at MIT, and there are a number of events and opportunities happening on campus throughout the year for students to connect with alumni.
They are able to connect with other Change Agents and host organisations from all the programmes by participating in SACHA’s ‘Change Agents for Life’ alumni community. Alumni of the programme discuss the power of reflection as a tool for learning, and how reflection can be made more meaningful for students.
Since then, in close cooperation with the Careers Service, we have been rolling out a School-wide project to situate careers and employability alongside our firm commitment to academic rigour.
Through the peer networks that the structures of the award facilitate, we find that it helps strengthen the bonds and relationships within and across the Programmes and the school, as well as enhancing students’ confidence and belief in their skills.
Vera Babida, now animating in Australia, recently talked to ECA Alumni about her experience of the Animation programme. In my experience, it has been more in touch with the professional world, as that is what you need to continue growing.
What evidence do we have to show our students develop these graduate attributes? Perhaps the best is that our graduates are highly regarded and sought after by employers, and the continued successes of our alumni. Gavin co-leads the development of SLICCs institution-wide with Simon.
