In our latest installment, we shine a spotlight on our beloved colleague and lead CSM client manager Rebecca Florey. What got you interested in higher education?
In this post, Amanda Meyer, based in the Global Health Academy, shares an inspiring example of extended learning with MSc Global Challenges alumni. Often immediate entry into further formal study is not practical – due to busy work and family lives – and gaining research employment in a new area needs a CV with appropriate experience.
The team included Tianna Ransom, CAPD Assistant Director of Career Exploration and two student Career Exploration Leaders: An An Chiang (Early Career Focus) and Jorge Martin Poza (Academia Focus). 1,818 students, postdocs, and recent alumni attended the events. 1,635 during the fall and 183 during IAP.
Ruth is Assistant Director, Careers Service, and SACHA Programme Director, and Emma is SACHA Programme Manager. They are able to connect with other Change Agents and host organisations from all the programmes by participating in SACHA’s ‘Change Agents for Life’ alumni community. What is SACHA?
We have a pool of trained alumni who are available both in Edinburgh and abroad, who can help to support students. We invite former alumni too, bringing together various generations of students, to share questions and experiences. This is where our mentoring program comes in. Overall, we’re building a community.
Through the peer networks that the structures of the award facilitate, we find that it helps strengthen the bonds and relationships within and across the Programmes and the school, as well as enhancing students’ confidence and belief in their skills. You can read the full PTAS report here.
Sophie is also an accomplished Waste Manager. She has project managed new waste strategies for the automotive industry, contracted and implemented waste management contracts for the University of Edinburgh, and benchmarked and conducted waste management gap analysis for many private and public organisations.

However, my line manager Andy Todd was always on hand to answer any questions I had, and the whole Digital Skills and Training team were really welcoming and friendly. As I was working on a separate, self-contained project, I did not have daily tasks given to me, but more of an overall expectation.

These sessions tend to be rated highly by students. We managed to find a dynamic and engaging teacher to talk about the Forest Schools work he had done with his pupils. I have been drawing on the alumnae network to enhance our teaching on a range of programmes since I came to Moray House in 2010. One of these is on StoryLine.
So too with students, whereby graduate attributes of networking, delegating, pitching, risk-taking were enhanced by the shared experience. Students also felt liberated to experiment with management roles, responsibilities, and presentation styles. This helped simplify and compartmentalise our communications.
That is how I came across the MSc Carbon Management course at Edinburgh University. The Carbon Management syllabus is made up of three pillars: Science, Business and Economics. How are school teaching staff and resources supported and managed to enable interdisciplinary teaching to occur? How can use of these resources be recognised, managed and transferred to reflect the teaching delivery? Who ‘owns’ and is responsible for an interdisciplinary course or programme?
It’s important to give students time to make an informed decision about whether to take a placement, and I found it useful to accompany students to an early meeting with potential placement hosts.
We made the work manageable by sharing it out, with students volunteering to support the convenor in various ways. To add to the workload, we organised further events – seminars, lectures and, in one case, a book launch – around the visits. Another difficulty was finding the right papers to discuss.
Student success ensures that students develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for employment in their chosen fields. Well-prepared graduates enhance the institution's reputation and contribute to a strong alumni network. Societal Impact Student success in higher education has a broader societal impact.
The AIFS office and staff provide support services for students and faculty including orientation, program management, emergency and incident response 24/7 for the duration of the program. . Local Connections: There are so many ways that students can immerse themselves into the life and culture of Grenoble.
T he mini-series hopes to capture a breadth of activities happening across campuses, to inspire staff and students to participate and expand on current offerings. Students must arrange their own placements, which will likely be in a medical specialty they are considering as a possible career. For example in 4th year, by which time students have already acquired some useful research skills, they can plan and manage their own project.
Student Experience Students commonly give feedback that they would like ‘real-life’ opportunities to use their degree during study. Our students feel under pressure to get involved in volunteering. Placements allow this but are quite challenging to resource.
Annette writes… I am impressed by how readily our students engage in their reflective blogs, often revealing a frank and rigorous analysis of what were sometimes quite considerable obstacles and challenges they were facing (a favourite is the “much delayed blog on procrastination”).
