Created in 2005 by Excelencia in Education, Examples of Excelencia is a national initiative that recognizes institutions and nonprofit organizations that identify, aggregate, and promote evidence-based practices that improve Latinx student access in higher education. One of the college’s most notable alumni who was then serving on its Board of Trustees, indeed one of the most accomplished civil rights attorneys and activists our nation has ever produced, championed my hiring. Side by side with her daughter, she now leads a nonprofit organization in Forest, Mississippi, promoting the legacy of her parents.
