The Career Exploration Series is an initiative led by Career Advising & Professional Development (CAPD) at MIT to promote career exploration throughout the fall and IAP for students and postdocs. In previous years, events were primarily condensed in the week leading up to the Fall Career Fair in September.
The first half of my career was spent in Alumni Relations, and then I spent the last 7 in Career Services. My day-to-day role was mostly focused on event management and other project management. In your view, what are some of the biggest changes student success roles in higher ed in the last five years?
We have a pool of trained alumni who are available both in Edinburgh and abroad, who can help to support students. This could be in 1-1 meetings, or through some of the events we set up. We invite former alumni too, bringing together various generations of students, to share questions and experiences.
How is the connection between current students and alumni? Do alumni easily offer internships or other opportunities to current students? There is a very strong alumni network at MIT, and there are a number of events and opportunities happening on campus throughout the year for students to connect with alumni.

Following placements, I found it useful to have a group meeting with students to reflect on what worked well and what could be improved. Ultimately, each specific placement is different, and anybody coordinating a number of them will need to be nimble and able to react to events.

The tools devised included a light-up installation, Making up your Mind , which enables young people to build personalised brain maps to be discussed at careers events, and IDK (I Don’t Know) , a mid-term creative festival of talks and workshops supported by a website, information pack and Snapchat filter.
We then also examined various iterations and developments through a simulation exercise to assess how the demand on these nurses changed throughout a procedure, and the skills they used to adapt to both these events in surgery as well.
A series of events will be held to orient students to the perspectives of community groups and organisations with an interest in the canal’s development. These stakeholders will act as clients to the students, assisting students in honing in on particular sites along the canal.
