We work with them directly, partnering with our National Alumni Council. Our fourth pillar is research and innovation. How do we stand up things that we know in our gut, but maybe haven't been proven through research? In the last few years, we've had somewhere between 2-3% of students attending. At present, none of the nation’s 101 HBCUs has Research 1 status, which refers to doctoral universities with high research activity.
Presentation skills are an important part of higher education and while these can be assessed utilising a range of authentic assessment types, oral presentations allow students to share information, describe and discuss their research and to do so utilising suitably crafted slides.
This is a student-led research project that culminates in a student-organised conference, where they share their findings with each other and members of the profession. The ‘Investigation’ begins in year 3 where the students are encouraged to engage with research literature in an area that is personally meaningful to them.
While many courses of this kind are excellent, there is nevertheless the danger of conveying an impression that research and teaching are disconnected. In comparison, the challenges for conducting interdisciplinary research seem to be at a lower level, for instance with the funding of a research grant, or as a student project – they are discrete and have clearly defined objectives. Furthermore, those resources of money and researchers, act as great enablers.
What evidence do we have to show our students develop these graduate attributes? Perhaps the best is that our graduates are highly regarded and sought after by employers, and the continued successes of our alumni. Student-Led, Individually-Created Courses (SLICCs) offer another approach and way forward.
