My admission process to Hope College was a whirlwind and very unexpected as I started my year during the COVID-19 pandemic. After going through rigorous and intensive interviews with different admission officers alongside my family, I was awarded multiple fellowships and academic scholarships given my unique background.
Many people put forth questions such as why some groups “stick together” or stay in their comfort zones, or believe that affirmative action really just helps rich minorities, while lower-income students of color get left behind. Should admissions preferences be based on class, instead of race? Why the SAT and SAT Prep fall short.
The conversation highlighted the financial strain on students and the diminishing feasibility of self-financing education without accruing substantial debt. The need to ensure liberty and equality for all, regardless of financial capabilities, was underscored as a crucial aspect of fair and equitable admissions policies. Right, right.
