The CSUEB Pathfinders Institute is dedicated to enhancing culturally relevant professional development through an intensive two-week program for faculty teaching critical first-year courses. CSUSM’s inclusive hiring practices have increased Latino representation among faculty, administrators and staff.
The needs start with physiological essentials such as food, water, shelter, clothing, and sleep. Unfortunately, many campuses fall short in evaluating whether their food options appropriately cater to diverse ethnic and cultural dietary needs. This contributes to their overall success and life development.
“Financial aid, retention, and faculty/staff representation are part of the Seal,” says Dr. Deborah Santiago, co-founder and CEO of Excelencia in Education, who says she is delighted to see institutions with intentional practices actively working toward increasing Latino representation in key positions.
The faculty and staff overseeing EPW know each student personally. “I Developing individual supports for each student.” “It is estimated that over 7 million people speak Spanish in Texas,” says Rueda-Acedo, who from 2005–13 was the sole faculty member. Latino faculty at UTA closely mentor the students.
A more recent trend is consolidating student services related to academics or health and wellness into a larger office or building. Tutoring, library resources, academicadvising and career services are smushed together, and counseling, disability services, medical centers and student care teams are sharing space more than ever before.
During this time, incoming students connect with their academic advisors, who are faculty members, and rising sophomores who serve as orientation leaders. Academic advisors and rising sophomores are crucial in first-year students’ lives after orientation. This takes place on campus even though the college is a commuter school.
Online and flexible learners: Embracing the innovations that came from the forced move online during the pandemic and supporting faculty in helping these learners succeed. Basic needs support: Expanding food pantries and related programs to support students who have minimal financial resources.
They started with a free campus app to facilitate feedback to faculty called ClassPulse. Student are quite different than they were when most faculty and administrators started their careers. Their encounter with U.S. Campuses are bureaucracies. Each has its own technology or data systems.
