In the survey, 53% of respondents stated that the ‘most daunting/scary’ aspect of research methods and statistics is ‘correctly applying stats to a write-up/explanation of the stats output’, with 25% stating that using a stats package/technology would be daunting. Overall, the feedback from the students aligned with existing research.

We also found that working with the students in this way is both an enjoyable and valuable experience but would suggest a few points to consider for others engaging in similar staff-student curriculum development partnerships: Create an opportunity at the start to discuss expectations and be prepared to review this regularly during the project.

Miranda McClellan ’18, MEng ’19 awarded 2025 Schwarzman Scholarship

Hailing from Texas, McClellan earned a BS in computer science and a minor in African Studies from MIT in June 2018 and received an MEng in computer science in June 2019. After graduating MIT, McClellan won a Fulbright grant to conduct research in Spain, where she studied applying machine learning to 5G networks.
